Abstract
| Whitney introduced matroids as a way of axiomatising the properties of a finite collection of points in a vector space. It is probable that he had vectors over the reals in mind, yet, historically, most attention has focussed on matroids that can be obtained from collections of vectors over finite fields. Indeed there now exist strong theorems for such matroids. By contrast we still know very little about matroids representable over infinite fields and what we do know is mainly negative. The talk will examine this remarkable dichotomy. |
