Research Groups

The Department of Mathematics has four major research groups; Applied Mathematics, Algebra and Combinatorics, Analysis and Topology, and Mathematics Education.

Research projects in Applied Mathematics

Our research in Applied Mathematics ranges from direct industrial applications through to the study of biological and medical questions.

Research projects in Pure Mathematics

Our research groups in Pure Mathematics are internationally acclaimed for their ground-breaking research.

Research projects in Mathematics Education

Our Mathematics Education group is renowned for its close contact with schools, and its research into how best to teach mathematics.

Postgraduate research topics

A selection of current and possible topics for postgraduate study.

Publications

Staff members and students publish their findings regularly.

Our research

Our department is the largest and most diverse in New Zealand. In pure mathematics we have internationally acclaimed research groups in analysis, cryptography, computational algebra and topology, while in applied mathematics we are known across the world for our research in areas ranging from mathematical biology to nonlinear dynamical systems to industrial tomography. We lead the world in mathematics education research and have strong links to local schools and the Faculty of Education.
