Abstract
Recent involvement in a University of Hawaii project with students in Micronesia has thrown me back into the sort of work that began my research career: elementary mathematical language in an indigenous context. Twenty teachers spread over the islands of Micronesia (Yap, Truk, Pohnpei, etc) are developing primary units of work drawing on their cultural contexts. It is illuminating to return to a research area and to be forced to look back on work done 25 years ago from a new perspective. How has this field moved on (and how has it not); what do I retain from the conclusions drawn then (and what do I question); and what do I think should be done as a result of research (and what should we not do)?
