The successful applicant for the 2018 Teaching Fellowship in the Department of Mathematics is Jared Hockly.

Jared has a BSc majoring in Mathematics from the University of Waikato and has taught in a wide variety of high schools in the UK and in New Zealand.

He is currently head of the mathematics department at Western Springs College.   The high school is moving to a Modern Learning Environment, and Jared will use his time at the University of Auckland to consider and prepare for the pedagogical challenges this will present.

He will be teaching undergraduate stage one mathematics - and ironically remembers wanting to be a maths lecturer when he was a year 13 student.

“I've since found my calling as a secondary school teacher, but the chance to see what it’s like to teach, learn and work at a university was too tempting, so I had to apply,” he says. “Being led and taught by my new maths department colleagues will be a real change.”

Jared says this fellowship will provide a refreshing break from his role as head of department and expects his experience to have a positive impact on mathematics education at Western Springs College.

“With study and some fresh input from those I'll be working with, I’m sure I'll come out of 2018 with a significantly updated understanding of mathematics education and be in a much better position to help guide students into STEM pathways from the institutional knowledge I gain,” he says.

“As Western Springs College transitions into a Modern Learning Environment I'm hoping to develop my understanding of the most effective ways of teaching maths and statistics in spaces like these.

“And while I’m away, there are opportunities for my colleagues to take on a leadership role within the maths department which we will all benefit from.”

Jared is also expected to make a service contribution to the department. He would like to get involved in making connections between schools and the university, both with teachers and students, so please consider inviting Jared to help out in outreach activities you may be organising.

Jared begins his Fellowship in early January 2018.
