The Society

The New Zealand Mathematical Society (Inc.) is the representative body of professional mathematicians in New Zealand, and was founded in 1974. Its aims include promotion of research in the mathematical sciences, the development, application and dissemination of mathematical knowledge within New Zealand, and effective cooperation and collaboration between mathematicians and their colleagues in New Zealand and in other countries.

Activities

  • Publication of the NZ Mathematical Society Newsletter (three times yearly)
  • Joint publication (with the University of Auckland) of the NZ Journal of Mathematics
  • Keeping track of mathematical visitors to New Zealand
  • Annual award of a Visiting Lectureship
  • Co-operation with the London Mathematical Society in the biennial award of the Forder Lectureship
  • Grants for financial support of mathematical conferences in Australasia, postgraduate student travel, mathematics in the South Pacific, and miscellaneous research activities
  • Annual NZMS Research Award
  • The Aitken Prize for best student paper at the NZ Mathematics Colloquium
  • Publication of a small number of textbooks for use in universities and secondary schools.
