RECENT NEWS OF CMSA MEMBERS and others

Good News -- Barbara Maenhaut and Darryn Bryant are new and proud parents!  Thomas Edward Maenhaut Bryant was born on Friday September 9, 2005 at 2.37 am, weighing in at 3.6 kg (or 7 lbs, 15 oz).  Congratulations, Barbara and Darryn!

We have just received sad news, about the death of Marta Sved.   Marta's long involvement with Mathematics at the University of Adelaide is best summarised by a quote from Graeme Cohen's forthcoming history of mathematics in Australia, entitled "Counting Australia In".

George and Marta Sved, long-time friends of Szekeres' from Hungary, had been in Adelaide since 1939, and with Felix Behrend, were to be influential in bringing Szekeres and his wife Esther to the country.  The Sveds both had very long involvements with the University of Adelaide.  George (1910-1994) was an accomplished mathematician who served the Department of Civil Engineering from 1950 to 1975, including two years as dean of the Faculty of Engineering.  Marta (formerly Marta Wachsberger) had beaten George into second place in a national mathematics competition in Hungary (so he married her, he used to say).  She was for many years employed as a tutor and then a senior tutor in mathematics, remaining as an honorary associate well into her retirement.  At the age of 74, she obtained a PhD from Adelaide, supervised by Rey Casse.  Born in Budapest on 16 May 1910, Marta Sved passed away in Adelaide on 30 September 2005.

We have also received sad news, about the death of George and Esther Szekeres on August 28,2005.   George is well-known for his work in Combinatorics and his involvement with CMSA.   More information can be obtained from

The web page for the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics is at http://ajc.math.auckland.ac.nz/.

The Journal is now published three times per year, in February, June and October.   CMSA Members are entitled to a $10 discount per volume.

There is a search facility for past authors and for keywords in the titles of papers.  Instructions to authors are also available at this web site.

The contents of all volumes, 1 to 33, are listed at the above web page.
We also now have free public access to the full papers in Volumes 1 to 23 inclusive.   All but the last four years are available free.

Submissions to the Australas. J. Combin. may be sent to ajc at maths.uq.edu.au.  Electronic submissions are encouraged.  For paper submissions, please check the web page.
