This workshop is to mark
John's
formal retirement from the University of
Auckland. John will have been a Professor at the University for
33 years, for most of
this time in the Mathematics and Statistics Departments. He has been
Head of Department for several terms including one as Foundation Head of
the Department of Computer Science, and has also played a
role in the wider university community. Not only is John a valuable
colleague but he is also an inspiration because of his enthusiasm for
mathematics in all forms. John's achievements have been recognised nationally through
being made a Fellow of
the Royal Society of New Zealand (1980) and awarded the Research Award
of the New Zealand Mathematical Society
(1991) and the Hector Medal of the Royal Society of
New Zealand
(1997). On the international scene he is widely regarded as one of the
premier research
workers in the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Above
all,
John is known as a people-person for his genuine warmth, care and encouragement for
all those he meets, especially his students. The three day minisymposium which the Department of Mathematics is
organising
to mark John's retirement, will be held on 14, 15 and 16 December 1998.
The program will include invited lectures by several well-known
mathematicians as well as a number of contributed lectures.
On 14 December the Department of Mathematics annual dinner will be
held at Langton's Restaurant on the slopes of Mt Eden. Participants
at the workshop who wish to attend the dinner at a cost of $NZ30
per person, should inform a member of the organising committee. Space is limited and it may not be possible to accommodate everyone who wishes
to come, so you should inform one of us of your wish to come as soon
as possible. John and
Jenny Butcher will host a social gathering at their home on the evening
of Wednesday 16 December, to which all
participants at the minisymposium are
invited. This will be in the form of a pot-luck dinner; that is, people
accepting this invitation are asked, if possible, to bring some shared
contribution to the meal with them. The address is 16 Wallace St,
Herne Bay and the time will be announced during the symposium.
