Tiberiu Popoviciu

Tiberiu Popoviciu was born in Arad, on February 16 1906. He was very good at mathematics during the high school. He started early (1923) the collaboration to the "Mathematical gazette"; at the annual competition of this revue from 1924, he obtained the first prize. While in the terminal years of the high school he published a lithograph revue of mathematics "Mathematical journal" (1923-1925) which he headed until he graduated the higher education. In 1924 he graduated the science section of "Moise Nicoara" high school from Arad, and then enlisted at the Bucharest University, studying mathematics at the Faculty of sciences.

Between 1927 and 1930 he studied in Paris at the Higher norms school".

In 1929 he published his first important mathematical paper concerning a problem of the best approximation of functions in the "Scientific Bulletin of the Romanian Academy".

At Paris he took again his licence in sciences in October 1928, then, on June 12 1933 he obtained the title of doctor in mathematics, after presenting the thesis with the title: "Sur quelques propriétés des fonctions d'une ou de deux variables réelles". In this thesis with preoccupations from the theory of functions of a real variable, Tiberiu Popoviciu defined and studies the higher rank convex functions.

After passing the thesis of doctorate in mathematics at Sorbona, Tiberiu Popoviciu returned to the country in 1933, and worked for a year as librarian (secretary) at the University of Cluj, then until April 1st, 1936, he was assistant to the department of professor Th. Angheluta from the Faculty of sciences of the University of Cluj.

From the winter of 1940 he passed to the University of Bucharest, as substitute for mathematical analysis. From October 1942 until 1946 he taught at Iasi, at the Faculty of sciences, as aggregate professor in the theory of functions. In 1946 he passed definitively at Cluj, where he worked in the beginning as titular of the department of higher algebra and the theory of numbers (1946-1948), then, from 1948, he remained professor head of department at the department of mathematical analysis, Faculty of mathematics and physics. He is still working in this position at the Faculty of mathematics and mechanics of the "Babes-Bolyai" University.

Tiberiu Popoviciu was correspondent member of the Academy of the People's Republic of Romania since November 1948 March 20, 1963, when he became titular member of the Academy at the section of mathematical sciences.
