The Department of Mathematics is pleased to announce their inaugural fellows for the new Margaret and John Kalman Trust fellowships.

The scheme was created to develop and promote mathematics and mathematics teaching in the Auckland secondary school community and follows on from the success of the Kalman Teacher Prizes in 2017 and 2018.

Five Kalman teacher fellows will be supported every year from 2019 to 2021.  The fellowships are worth $5,000 each and will cover the costs of releasing fellows from their teaching commitments, as well as a $1,000 honorarium in recognition of their participation in this scheme.

The successful applicants for 2019 are:

  • Sam Carroll, Waiheke High School
  • Jared Hockly*, Western Springs College
  • Shan-I Lee, Auckland Girls Grammar School
  • Krista Rabullal, ACG Strathallan
  • Linda van Zyl, ACG Parnell

Congratulations to our inaugural fellows!

Professional teaching fellow and fellowship co-ordinator, Rachel Passmore, says all applicants for 2019 are to be commended for the high standard of their applications and for the creativity and innovation of their proposed projects.

“The successful applicants were selected on the merit of their projects and experience but also on their potential for collaboration with other Fellows," she says.

“The fellows will work collaboratively on projects in 2019 around the inaugural theme ‘How can technology be exploited for the benefit of mathematics teaching and learning’.”

They will also participate in a year-long programme of events at the University of Auckland, which will include collaborations, seminars, presentations, resource development, up-skilling mathematical/statistical content knowledge and development of leadership skills.

“We look forward to welcoming these fellows to the department early in the New Year,” Rachel says.

Our thanks to the Margaret and John Kalman Trust for their generous, continuing and increasing support for this and several other schemes to increase awareness of mathematics at all levels.

*Jared Hockly was also the successful recipient of the 2018 Mathematics Teaching fellowship.
