Margaret and John Kalman Trust | 2018 Teacher prizes announced

10 September 2018

In 2017, the Margaret and John Kalman Trust sponsored the inaugural Kalman Trust Teacher Prizes to acknowledge the amazing work being done by secondary school mathematics and statistics teachers in the Auckland region.

Two prizes were awarded and in the light of the success of this scheme, the Kalman Trust generously decided to double the prize money for 2018 and four prizes of $5,000 each have been awarded.

The selection panel (Bernd Krauskopf, Igor’ Kontorovich, Rachel Passmore and a representative from the Trust) say they had a difficult task selecting four recipients because of high quality of the more than 30 applications they received.

Our congratulations go to the recipients of the 2018 Kalman Trust Teacher Prizes:

  • Krista Rabullal, ACG Strathallan
"Krista has generated significant interest in mathematics at her school through a mathematics newsletter written in part by students, increased participation in mathematics competitions and an end of year mathematics prizegiving."
  • Chadd Davis, Northcote College
"Chadd has used 3D printing in a number of mathematics activities and linked up with a commercial company to get some student creations printed in titanium."
  • Tyler Benson, Mt Roskill Grammar School
"Tyler has developed an innovative bridge building mathematical activity, as well as some “digital escape rooms”."
  • Rebecca O’Gram, Westlake Boys High School
"Rebecca has her own Youtube channel with 1176 subscribers and over 260,000 minutes of videos. She also uses gamification to promote interest in mathematics."

The winners will be awarded their prizes at their school’s end of year prize-giving. They will also be invited to spend a day with the Department in early 2019 with a group of their students.

Our thanks to the Margaret and John Kalman Trust for their generous, continuing and increasing support for this and several other schemes to increase awareness of mathematics at all levels.
