Emeritus Professor Boris Pavlov (1936 - 2016)

With great sadness we announce that our former colleague Emeritus Professor Boris Pavlov passed away on 30 January 2016.

He was a distinguished mathematical analyst and theoretical physicist from St Petersberg, Russia, who held a Personal Chair in Pure Mathematics at the University of Auckland from 1994 to 2007. He worked on joint research projects with numerous colleagues of the Department of Mathematics and beyond, including Gaven Martin, Colin Fox and Cristian Calude. Students whom he greatly influenced include Mark Harmer (PhD), Rowan Killip (MSc), Sikimeti Mau (MSc) and Simon Marshall (MSc).

Boris was well known for his high level of scholarschip in diverse areas of analysis. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2004 and a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in 2010. Since 2009, he was a member of the then newly formed Institute for Advanced Study at Massey University Albany.

Boris leaves behind his wife Irina, a daughter and a son.
