We are delighted to announce that the Judy Paterson Mathematics Education Scholarship for 2016 has been awarded to Sheila Singh.

Sheila has taught mathematics from years 9 to 13 at Tamaki College, a decile one secondary school, since 2009. She will study a Master of Professional Studies, and plans to investigate how digital based teaching can help to raise numeracy levels in NCEA levels 1 to 3 at Tamaki College. Through her research, she hopes to develop both her skills in mentoring at-risk students, and her compassion and strong work ethic in mathematics teaching. Congratulations to Sheila on this award.

About the scholarship:

The Judy Paterson Mathematics Education Scholarship was established in 2014 in recognition of the contribution made by our much-loved former colleague to Mathematics Education, and especially her work with secondary school mathematics teachers in the Auckland region. The main purpose of the Scholarship is to support graduate level professional development for a teacher from a decile 1 or 2 school in the wider Auckland region. It is funded initially by the Department of Mathematics and by generous donations from friends and colleagues of Judy. Further information on the scholarship and an opportunity to make a donation to help fund it can be found at https://www.givingtoauckland.org.nz/en/FundPages/the-judy-paterson-mathematics-education-scholarship.html
