Semester One

Maths 91W Foundation Mathematics I

Description

This is a one-semester course designed for students who at present lack the necessary background for tertiary courses in mathematics. Maths 91W is a first step for students to gain enough mathematical background to begin a suitable Stage One course in Mathematics.

Calculators

Each student will need a scientific calculator with a fraction button.
Students also have access to a class set of graphics calculators that are used to help with the understanding of functions.

Coursework

This contributes 100% to your final mark, and consists of group work, regular assignments, short and long tests during the semester, and a two-hour test (worth 40%) at the end of the semester.

Grades

Grades are awarded from A to D. To gain 2 points for the course, students must get a C- grade or better.

OR Maths 93W Foundation Extension Mathematics I

For a small group of better prepared students, an alternative course Maths 93W, Foundation Extension Mathematics I, is offered. This course follows the outline of Maths 91W, but some knowledge is assumed, and topics are studied in greater depth. The course is assessed in the same way as Maths 91W, with 100% coursework.

Semester Two

Maths 92W Foundation Mathematics II

Description

This is a one-semester course designed to follow Maths 91W, for students who at present lack the necessary background for tertiary courses in mathematics. Students who successfully complete both Maths 91W and 92W have enough mathematical background to begin a suitable Stage One course in Mathematics.

Course Work

This contributes 50% to your final mark, and consists of group work, regular assignments, short tests during the semester, and a one-hour Semester test.

Examination and Grades

A 2-hour examination will be held in November. The examination will usually contribute 50% to your final mark.


Grades are awarded from A to D. To gain 2 points for the course, students must get a C- grade or better.

OR Maths 94W Foundation Extension Mathematics II

Description

This is a one-semester course for better prepared students, designed to follow Maths 93W.

Grades are awarded from A to D. To gain 2 points for the course, students must get a C- grade or better.
