Links with Schools

The Mathematics Department has developed links to schools at different levels.

1. Teacher Workshops and Resources

2. The Mathematics Olympiad is an International Competition in which New Zealand participates each year. It is held in different cities around the world and each year students from Year 12 and Year 13 take part in a local competition to choose the best. Students customarily attend a training camp before they sit a final test and the most talented form the team for the Olympiad. Recent competitions have been held in Taipei, Bucharest, Seoul and Washington DC.

3. Max (Mathematics Acceleration and extension for high school students) is an initiative aimed at students who are willing to be challenged in mathematics in Year 13. It is essentially a chance to gain credits in a degree programme while still at Secondary School. Students attend lectures and tutorials one evening a week from 4.30 pm to 7 pm, or study extramurally. In 2004 MAX students will enrol in MATHS 153 (Accelerated Mathematics), a first semester course which is academically equivalent to MATHS 150 (Advancing Mathematics 1) and to ENGSCI 111 (Mathematical Modelling 1). Those passing MATHS 153 will be eligible to enrol in any stage 2 mathematics course, including MATHS 250, ENGSCI 211 and MATHS 208, in their first year at University.

4. The Mathematics Trail has been designed with Intermediate pupils in mind. Pupils are able to follow written instructions to make their way around the campus and Albert Park and stop periodically to do some mathematics about what they see or some feature. The complete trail takes about two hours to complete and as it is primarily outside it is best to organize for a fine weather day and when the students here are on holiday.
