Student Assistance in Mathematics
Most programmes available to assist students in mathematics begin in week 2 of semester.
A light-blue hand-out detailing all the programmes available should be distributed in lectures. Copies of these are also available from the 3rd floor mathematics office, or the Student Resource Centre (SRC) in the basement of the Science Centre, building 303 (Maths/Physics building).
Some specific initiatives from the information sheet are highlighted below:
-
The Mathematics Assistance Room B25 will be open 9am-5pm daily during lecture
periods for assistance with all mathematics courses. Help for stage 2 & 3 courses is
limited to certain tutors and staff. This will be indicated on the roster, see the door
of B25 (basement building 303).
-
Rooms and times for small class tutorials in all stage one courses & MATHS 250 should
be individually notified in lectures and be displayed on the SRC notice-board. You
enroll for tutorials on nDeva unless you are doing Maths108; for Maths108 tutorial
enrollment should be available on Cecil in week 1. All tutorials should be operating
in week 2. The calculator tutorial starts in week 1.
-
The Mandarin-Language support tutorials will operate in room B10 (master's teaching
room, basement building 303), from 12noon-1pm Tuesdays and 2-3pm Thursdays.
-
The TI-89 Calculator support tutorials will operate in room B10 (master's teaching room,
basement building 303), from 9-10am Wednesdays and Thursdays. In any one week the
material covered in both tutorials will be the same.<---!>
-
At the Student Learning Centre, situated on floor 3 of the Kate Edger Commons, you can
obtain one-to-one tutoring in basic mathematics.
An initiative not on the information sheet:
-
DELNA, the Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment, is available free
to all students but is particularly useful for any student whose first language is not
English. This initiative is like a health check-up, in that it will highlight any
problem areas and then show you what to do to improve them. It does not appear on your
academic record and does not exclude you from courses in which you are enrolled. Ask
your lecturer for a Delna information handout or e-mail
delna@auckland.ac.nz. You can enroll for Delna on-line via www.delna.auckland.ac.nz/booking/.
