Prime numbers and their nature has been fascinating since the early time of number theory. Primes are the building blocks of composite numbers and broadly utilized in number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, analysis, and computer sciences. Euclid defined prime as "that which is measured by the unit alone" in as early as 300 BC. However, curiousity for primes started as early as 2300 years prior to Euclid. Some of the challenges in primes are to determine whether a larger integer is prime or composite, prime gaps and how primes are distributed. This talk will survey the history of prime patterns, probabilistic and deterministic primality tests, applicability of primes to cryptography, and open problems related to primes. |
