This talk will be accessible to everyone. It concerns optimisation. As everyone knows real-valued continuous functions defined on compact spaces attain their maximum value. However, once one relaxes the condition that the domain space is compact this is not longer true. There are several well-known ways of getting over this problem. One of them is to perturb the function slightly to a function that does attain its maximum value. Theorem of this type are called "Variational Theorems". In this talk I will present a new and very general Variational Theorem. I also guarantee that the talk is accessible to a general mathematical audience. |
