Abstract
The subconvexity problem for L-functions is one of the central problems in analytic number theory.  I will give an overview of it, and describe some of its applications to equidistribution and counting of arithmetic objects.  If time permits, I will sketch some recent work on subconvexity by myself and Ruixiang Zhang.
