When given a composition algebra Hurwitz showed in 1898 that it must have dimension 1, 2, 4 or 8. If our base field is R these are the real numbers, complex numbers, quaternions and octonions that we've all learned to love. If the quadratic form is isotropic we obtain the so called split composition algebras of which there is only one up to isomorphism for a given dimension and field. Using knowledge of the lower dimensional cases and the theory of linear algebraic groups we will determine that the automorphism group of the split Octonion algebra is type G_2. |
