Abstract
We report on recent advances regarding the approximative trace, which is a notion of boundary trace for individual Sobolev functions on general domains. Introduced in the context of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on rough domains, the approximative trace has striking applications in the study of boundary value problems associated with elliptic operators on irregular domains. While for smooth domains it agrees with the classical trace, in general it exhibits new phenomena and departs from two seemingly essential mainstays: unconditional existence and uniqueness.
