Inverse and direct theorems for best uniform approximation by polynomials

Abstract:
It is shown that the standard method of obtaining direct (Jackson) theorems
for the order of best uniform approximation by algebraic polynomials from
those for trigonometric polynomials also provides inverse (Bernstein) theorems.
