New Zealand Centurions

Records

Introduction

If you read in the newspaper that A. Runner has set a world record in the 1500 metre run, you can be reasonably confident the record was set under the same exacting conditions as the old record. Similarly for the 100 metre freestyle in swimming, a double FITA round in archery and the 4000 metre team pursuit in cycling.

Unfortunately, the same can not be said for centurion or ultra walking. There are at least three reasons for this:

Hence it is difficult to talk about world records or even possibly national records as the terms are used in Athletics. Nevertheless, the achievements are usually called records.

New Zealand National Records

Women

The available information on New Zealand national records for women is scanty. We are compiling a list and we expect this work will take a while.

Many of the records in the following lists of national records for men were supplied by Jack Tregurtha. The lists come from the 2000 edition of the handbook for the New Zealand Masters Athletics. The age group M40 means men 40 to 44 years old, M45 means men 45 to 49 years old and so on. Although all records are described as records for the road, some were set on a track. For some age-groups, we have listed previous records or other good performances. We have listed the previous record for some age groups.

Further details or confirmation are required for some records.

Other performances

In the book The Super Athletes: a record of the limits of human strength, speed and stamina (published 1970 by A.S. Barnes & Co., Inc., ISBN 0-498-06651-7), the author David P. Willoughby states on page 437 that the professional world record for walking 100 miles was set by George N. Brown in 1915 and the time was 14 hours 34 minutes. It is unclear under what conditions this record was set. On page 432 of the same book there is a table of records for amateur walking. The entries in the table include:
