Department of Mathematics
Events for Schools
The Department of Mathematics holds many events throughout the year for primary and high school students. Find information on recent events below.
Hugh Gribben, Mathematics educator, is offering Mathematical origami workshops. This is hands on mathematics. Mathematical questions arise as you do the folding and from the finished model. Workshops are available for junior or senior classes, small or large groups. They are hands on, with something to take home and talk about. Everything is provided: you just have to arrange a time.

Year five and six school pupils experienced a little of University life when Doctor Philip Sharp enthused 60 students from Ramarama Primary School with his Astronomy workshop. The two hour lesson combined group activities and plenty of time for questions from the young enquiring minds.
"The talks and activities were pitched at exactly the right level and the children have been bursting with intellectual excitement ever since. On an educational and on a human level this was an outstanding experience," says Ramarama School Deputy Principal Robin Hall.
Ivan Reilly visited Westlake Boys High School (WBHS) where he talked to about 90 year nine students from WBHS, Westlake Girls High School, Carmel College and Rosmini College, about competition Mathematics, especially Mathematical Olympiads. Everyone did some Mathematics, and took home some questions and solutions to problems.
The University of Auckland’s Incredible Science Day always features at least two activities that are Mathematically based.
