PhD student support

The department will assist all PhD students with their scholarship applications.

Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships funded from outside the Department of Mathematics. Students having success in such applications may receive supplements from some of the options listed below, they should discuss their needs with the PhD Adviser in the first instance.

Scholarship applications

For help with scholarship applications contact the PhD Adviser Tom ter Elst. He has access to a more extensive list of scholarships and experience with successful application.

New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand should apply for the following scholarships:

  • The University of Auckland Postgraduate Tuition Fees Bursaries
  • The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship

Scholarships available to international postgraduate students include:

  • New Zealand International Doctoral Scholarship
  • The University of Auckland International Doctoral Fees Bursary
  • NZAID Study Award and Postgraduate Scholarship
  • ADB-Japan Scholarship
  • Fulbright Scholarship
  • Commonwealth Scholarship

Financial support

The University of Auckland supports PhD travel and conference participation via:

The Department has various types of financial support for registered PhD students including:

  • teaching duties in the Department of Mathematics
  • funding from research grants
  • PBRF grants
  • the Department of Mathematics provides every PhD student with shared office space,
  • a computer, computing facilities including software licenses, printing, email and internet access, stationery and photocopying, as well as library resources access.
