Pre-degree and preparatory courses

Students who wish to start a degree but who do not meet the prerequisites may want to read about our pre-degree courses.

Mathematics Acceleration and Extension for high school students (MAX)

MAX is aimed at students who are willing to be challenged in mathematics in Year 13. It is essentially a chance to gain credits in a degree programme while still at Secondary School. Students attend lectures and tutorials one evening a week from 4.30pm to 7pm, or study extramurally. MAX students enrol in MATHS 153: Accelerated Mathematics, a first semester course which is academically equivalent to MATHS 150: Advancing Mathematics 1 and to ENGSCI 111: Mathematical Modelling 1. Those passing MATHS 153 will be eligible to enrol in any Stage II mathematics course, including MATHS 250, ENGSCI 211 and MATHS 208, in their first year at University. For more information see the MAX course page found below.

Superstart

Superstart is a refresher course for students enrolling in MATHS 108, MATHS 150, ENGSCI 111 or PHYS 111 who have:

  • a low level of achievement in NCEA Level 3 Calculus (achievement rather than merit) or in CIE A2 Mathematics
  • gaps in their preparation, either from incomplete Level 3 NCEA credits or by having completed CIE AS rather than A2
  • studied Statistics rather than Calculus at level 3
  • 7th form equivalent qualifications, but have not studied mathematics for some time.

For more information see the Superstart course page found below.

MATHS 92F: Foundation Mathematics 2

This programme aims to use the skills learnt in MATHS 91F: Foundation Mathematics 1 to develop an understanding of functions in their tabular, algebraic and graphical representations. Good grades in this course prepares students for MATHS 102: Functioning in Mathematics. This second mathematics course is for students enrolled in the Tertiary Foundation Certificate.

Restrictions: MATHS 92W
Availability: S2C
Points: 15
Coordinator: Phil Kane

Office hours: Tues 3-4pm, Wed 10-11am, Fri 10-11am (Teaching Weeks 1, 3, 6, 9, 11, and 13)
