NZMS Membership and Subscriptions

The membership of the New Zealand Mathematical Society consists of a wide variety of professional and amateur mathematicians, not only those employed in educational and research institutions in New Zealand, but also a good number based in industrial and commercial enterprises and in other countries.

As at July 1996, the Society included 154 Ordinary members, 16 Reciprocity members, 49 Student members, 1 Life member, 14 Honorary members, and a further 30 `free one-year' members.

Applications for ordinary membership are invited from any persons interested in the objects of the Society. There are no eligibility criteria, however the NZMS Council reserves the right to consider each application individually.

The rate for Ordinary members includes $22.00 for annual subscription to the New Zealand Journal of Mathematics. Members of the NZ Statistical Association or Operational Research Society of NZ may seek an exemption from the journal subscription if they wish.

Reduced subscription rates are available for students, and also for overseas residents who are fully paid-up members of societies with which the NZMS maintains a reciprocity agreement (including the American Mathematical Society, the Australian Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the London Mathematical Society, and the Mathematical Society of Japan).

In addition, the Society offers one year's free membership to new members of staff and to new postgraduate students at NZ University Mathematics Departments.

Current subscription rates are set out below:

Normally these rates are discounted if payment is made before 31 March each year.

Life membership is open to retired persons, on payment of a sum equal to three times the current annual subscription rate.

Institutional membership may be granted by the Council to other associations or institutions interested in the objectives of the Society.

Also the Council may, at its discretion, award Honorary life membership to any person of distinction in the field of mathematics or any person whose work or whose services to the Society are judged by the Council to merit election to honorary membership.

Non-ordinary members may subscribe to the NZ Journal of Mathematics on request with an additional payment of $22.00.

Further information about subscription may be obtained from the NZMS Membership Secretary:
