| Speaker: Alex Galicki Affiliation: University of Auckland Time: 12 noon Thursday, 2 May, 2013 Location: 303-412 |
Abstract
| The seminar consists of two parts. The first one is an introduction to classical descriptive set theory. We will present a brief history of the discipline, its main motivation questions, basic terminology and some classical results. The second part is concerned with Invariant Descriptive Set Theory and, in particular, with applications of IDST to classification problems in mathematics. We will briefly introduce the basic notions and some ideas of IDST and proceed to prove a couple of results related to the isometric classification of metric Polish spaces. |
