Abstract
| Like other universities, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) strives to be accessible to a wide range of high-school graduates while also reducing student drop-out rates, maintaining high-quality programs, and producing well educated university graduates. Accurate placement of matriculating students into entry-level university mathematics papers is important for achieving these goals in STEM areas. This study identified factors available in UMD student information records from 2006 through 2009 that correlated with student success in entry-level mathematics papers. Minimum placement requirements based on a combination of high school math grade and standardized test score were recommended. An Excel student-advisement tool and associated advisement guidelines were also constructed. A follow-up validation study included data from four subsequent semesters. Both studies provided opportunities for undergraduate-student research. |
