Abstract
Mathematics university students and professors spend a considerable amount of time engaged in activities related to mathematical proof: they construct proofs, present them orally or in writing, read proofs in an attempt to comprehend (sometimes evaluate) them. In this talk I will present a series of studies that we, the Proof Comprehension Research Group at Rutgers University (U.S.), have conducted in order to investigate: (1) the way in which professors present proofs in an effort to get their students to understand them, (2) some proof-reading strategies that mathematicians and students employ, and (3) novel ways in which professors and researchers can assess proof comprehension. I will argue that this line of research can help us identify proof-presentation and proof-reading strategies that increase proof comprehension.
