Life is a numbers game for Professor Gaven Martin, one of New Zealand's top mathematicians.

The Albany resident, who heads Auckland University's department of mathematics, is the rlrst mathematician to be granted a James Cook Research Fellowship, regarded as the top seience and technology award.

Professor Martin plans to use the fellowship researching non-linear analysis in geometry.

But first he will undertake a three-month research post in Stockholm, having also won a fellowship from the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences.

Professor Martin is thrilled and modest, placing much of the credit for his achievements at Auckland University's door.

"This is clearly the strongest mathematics department in New Zealand and certainly among the top few in Australasia," he says.

His main areas of interest are in Geometric Function Theory (Quasiconformal mappings and non-linear analysis) and Discrete Groups and Hyperbolic Geometry (low
dimensional topology and geometry).
